Adjustment

An appointment after the appliances are installed to track treatment progress and make adjustments to the appliance to further advance the tooth and/or jaw movement.

Appliance

Any apparatus used by the orthodontist that will attach to teeth or the head. Result should be teeth movement or jaw adjustment.

Archwire

A metal wire attached to the brackets that will move teeth.

Band

Metal bands that are placed on the back molars to which other orthodontic appliances are attached.

Banding

Securing orthodontic bands to teeth.

Bonding

Attaching brackets to teeth using a special adhesive.

Buccal Tube

Small metal piece welded to the exterior of a molar band.

Bracket

Metal or ceramic pieces attached to each tooth to guide teeth into proper position and maintain archwire placement. Brackets bond directly to the tooth with a tooth-colored adhesive. Modern brackets are small and light.

Cephalmotetric X-rays

Head x-ray that shows the position of teeth and jaws and their relationships. Used to determine jaw and tooth alignment and growth rates. Chain – Stretchable plastic to hold archwires into brackets and used to move teeth.

Clear aligners

series of clear removable trays that move teeth into a better position. This technology uses a 3D virtual teeth setup. The orthodontist will advise whether clear aligners or braces can be used to correct the problem

Consultation

Meeting with the orthodontist and the treatment coordinator to have the initial assessment or to discuss treatment plans and options.

Debonding

Removal of bonded brackets.

Elastics

Elastic are rubber bands that are applied by the patient to provide gentle continuous force to align the bite.

Fixed Retainer

A retainer that is bonded or glued to the back sides of the front teeth to hold teeth in their final positions. This is a permanent fixture but gives little discomfort while eating or speaking.

Forsus

This is a spring-like appliance attached to the back teeth to move lower teeth and lower jaw forward to correct large overbites. Usually this appliance is worn for 6 to 9 months and adjustments are made every 6 to 8 weeks.

Herbst Appliance

When the lower jaw is behind the upper jaw, a Herbst Appliance is used to correct this skeletal issue by a pushing the upper jaw back and the lower jaw forward. This appliance is usually worn between 12 and 15 months.

Impressions

To form a mold of teeth, the patient bites into a container holding a rubber-like material, which hardens to form the mold.

Invisalign

One of the brands of clear aligners (see clear aligners). These are clear trays worn on the teeth to gradually move them into correct alignment. Clear aligners cannot be used effectively and efficiently in all cases.

Lip Bumper

A removable appliance used in children to create and save space to accommodate the not-yet-emerged permanent teeth. This is a procedure used to avoid tooth extractions.

Ligating Module

A small, plastic device shaped like a donut used to hold archwires into the brackets.

Molar Band

see Band. A device that has slots to hold archwires, lip bumpers, facebows, and other pieces of apparatus.

Mouthguard

A device to prevent mouth injuries during activities like sports, frequently recommended for orthodontic patients.

Palatal Expander

Device used to widen the upper jaw.

Panoramic X-Rays

Standard x-rays taken by a machine that rotates around the patient’s head for a better view of jaws and teeth.

Phase 1 Treatment

Early treatment to intercept or correct a developing problem. Usually performed on younger patients that have a mixture of baby teeth and permanent teeth. Almost always a definitive further correction (phase 2) is needed later.

Phase 2 Treatment

Use of braces or other orthodontic appliances after all adult teeth have appeared.

Photographs

Facial and intra-oral photographs that are taken before, during, and after treatment.

Records

Cephalometric and panoramic x-rays, photos, study models or scans to aid the orthodontist in treatment planning.

Removable Retainer

A device worn after braces are removed to assure permanent positions of the corrected teeth. Initially worn 24 hours a day and then only during night hours.

Separators

Small plastic or metal components used to create space between teeth to accommodate bands.

Wax

A clear wax used to prevent lip irritation from braces.

Wax Bite

Biting into a wax sheet leaves marks and is used to determine the progress of the orthodonture work especially in relation to alignment of upper and lower teeth.
